The Bennett Project (episode 3) – It’s Alive!

Well!

After much toil, blood, sweat & tears IT’S ALIVE!!

I was in Powers today so I swung up there and had a look.

The USB cable i was using for the VHF side did not have any retention on the computer side so I had to do a bit of bending.

I also had an issue with the HF radio no longer responding to commands from the computer but that seems to have been taken care of with a radio power cycle. I believe this was due to the musical chairs played with the USB cables.

As a precaution I went through and disabled any and all power saving setting in the computer up to and including USB shutdown on inactivity.

Before leaving the site I was able to strong arm Tom KF7RSF into some thorough testing and both the HF and VHF sides worked well. This was confirmed an hour later when I was able to connect to both HF and VHF gateways from the County EOC! Not long after Dan W7WVF did the same from south of Bandon!

So for the time being we are operational on 80M, 2M & GMRS! I hope to be back up in the next week or two with part for a more suitable HF antenna. The plan at this point is to replace the Monoband di-pole with an 80M off center feed dipole so we have a full compliment of bands, sadly we did find that the noise level on 20M renders it useless however 40M seems to be good!

Peace,
