In October 2020, KE7ADD reported completing his first APRS contacts through the International Space Station—one example of how amateur radio combines traditional communications with satellites, computers, and modern digital technology.

Radio and Emergency Preparedness

One of the greatest strengths of amateur radio is its ability to operate independently of normal infrastructure.

When telephone, cellular, internet, or commercial radio systems become overloaded or unavailable, trained amateur operators can establish communications using portable radios, independent antennas, emergency power, digital messaging, and locally maintained repeaters.

KE7ADD’s interests bring together amateur radio, emergency communications, community preparedness, field operations, and practical technology. The goal is not simply to collect radios or make distant contacts. It is to understand how communications work, build dependable systems, practice using them, and help strengthen the community.
