Annual Smoke Dragon Migration!

Every year around this time, one of Oregon’s least-understood natural phenomena begins: the Annual Chinese Smoke Dragon Migration.

Naturalists say the great Smoke Dragons emerge somewhere over the Pacific before drifting gracefully inland, where they settle into valleys, mountain passes, and occasionally your backyard. Their favorite habitat appears to be anywhere with an Air Quality Index above “Probably Fine.”

Experts recommend observing them from a safe distance, preferably through the faint orange glow of the afternoon sun. If you hear someone say, “Looks hazy today,” simply nod knowingly. They have spotted the migration.

Local folklore claims the dragons feed primarily on campfire stories, dry forests, and the hopes of anyone planning a clear view from the coast. They are especially active whenever you’ve just washed your car or planned a scenic hike.

Signs the migration has reached your neighborhood include:
• Mountains mysteriously disappearing.
• Sunsets that look suspiciously apocalyptic.
• Everyone checking the PurpleAir map every fifteen minutes.
• Someone confidently announcing, “It’s probably marine layer.”

Wildlife officials remind everyone not to approach or attempt to domesticate a Smoke Dragon. Instead:
🔥 Keep an eye on local fire conditions.
😷 Limit strenuous outdoor activity when air quality is poor.
🏡 Prepare your home for wildfire season.
📻 Stay informed through local emergency management.

While the Chinese Smoke Dragon remains scientifically unverified, Oregon’s annual wildfire smoke unfortunately is very real. Here’s hoping this year’s migration is short, the forests stay safe, and we can all get back to seeing more than three miles down the road.
